There Was Something

We were built to build.

We were made to make.

We were formed to form.

At one point, there was nothing.

Then, there was something.

Something happened between nothing and something.

The Bible calls it God.

He spoke.

He created.

He brought existence into existence.

And then he breathed into humanity the same ability.

We speak and name.

We create.

We bring into existence.

We see a desired future and we move towards it.

We see a reality not yet realized and bring it to be.

We take material and color and make art.

We take sound and rhythm and make music.

We take wood and rock and make houses.

We take time and events and make stories.

We take egg and sperm and make a child.

Our vocation seems to be taking what we’ve been given and making something with it.

Richard Rohr calls this “participating in Creation.

Jordan Peterson calls it “speaking order into chaos.

Genesis says we are made “in the image of God.

We all have stuff.

We’ve all been given.

We have the present but see a different future.

We see the chaos, the pain, the fear, the emptiness, the surface of the deep.

And we have the capacity to do something about it.

We have the responsibility to do something about it.

You could say we have a God-given obligation to do something about it.

It doesn’t have to remain the way it is.

What’s old can be made new.

What’s wrong can be made right.

What’s dead can rise.

We have time, energy, ideas, abilities, resources, etc.

The question is:

What are we going to do with what we have?
